The Working Group

In 2007, a number of Victoria Park neighbors expressed concern about a disconnect in communications between City of Kitchener managers and staff and people living near, and concerned about Victoria Park. In response, the City established the Victoria Park Working Group (VPWG). Four people nominated by the Victoria Park Neighborhood Association were appointed to the VPWG as citizen members of the group; the exact members have changed a few times over the life of the group as some have had to leave and have been replaced. The current citizen members are: rych mills, Bob Sharpe, Jill Armstrong and Laura Seaman.  Past members included Sue Coulter and Tony Maas. The citizen members are  joined in the group on a regular basis by city staff Greg Hummel, manager of park planning, development and operations; Lori Wadsworth (recorder); Victoria Park ward councillor Frank Etherington, and others as requested.

Using the 2003 Victoria Park Foundations Plan as a basis, the VPWG will work as a communications conduit between park users and city staff. Regular meetings to review progress on the Foundations Plan (a document that guides the planning and design of Victoria Park, and has subsequently informed the Victoria Park Strategic Plan) will allow citizens to voice concerns and will give staff the opportunity to explain whenever the Plan’s objectives are delayed or sidetracked. In addition the VPWG will be able to take citizens’ comments, complaints, and suggestions related to Victoria Park directly to the appropriate city manager and bring their explanations and comment directly back to the concerned parties.

In October of 2007, the VPWG met with the Community Services department to begin this process. In November the group joined city staff for a park walkabout where plans, problems and proposals were discussed. Problems such as pavilion renovations, water flow, lake depth, lighting, and traffic calming were identified at this time.

Regular meetings are be held by VPWG with city staff and reports from these meetings will be placed on this VPNA website. As a way to keep residents of the Victoria Park neighbourhood informed, the VPWG will attempt to publish regular columns in the VPNA newsletter and on the VPNA website.
